In Africa, inspite of the contemporary advancements on the continent in technology, education and enlightenment, child poverty has increased almost unabated. Contributory to this unfortunate statistic are factors like lowered mortality natal rates with corresponding increase in pregnancies; increased rural to urban migrations; increasing child trafficking and governmental demolition of inner cities and slums. In most major cities in sub saharan Africa, children can be seen trading in slow moving traffic and many more have to survive through foraging for leftover items (food, clothing etc) from refuse dumps and heaps. The most crushing aspect of this is that society has accepted it as normal. Majority of commuters do not notice the children darting between traffic or children scrounging for scraps at the refuse dump. Children, the leaders of tomorrow, dying while alive. We must have a conscience. These are our children. Every child is our child. It only takes a minute. To help. To love. To shine.
